Squarespace has released version 6 and its new iOS app

Web presence builder Squarespace announced on Tuesday that it has released version 6 of its website builder. Along with the new version, Squarespace has updated its iOS app.

According to a blog post Tuesday on Squarespace, the new version has been reengineered from the ground up, and includes over 50 new features. The updates touch on every aspect of its platform, Squarespace says.

While primarily a tool for creating websites, Squarespace also by default provides hosting and domain registration. While it doesn’t categorize itself as a web hosting company, customers are using tools like Squarespace, Yola, and Weebly that may otherwise choose a web host.

Squarespace updates include new templates which are all equipped with built-in mobile experience. Squarespace 6 also includes LayoutEngine, a page building technology that allows users to create magazine-quality page layouts.

Squarespace 6 also improves social integration features, importing, and media management.

Perhaps one of the biggest updates, and one that a lot of website builders have focused on recently, is being more developer friendly. Squarespace says it will make its developer platform available shortly so developers can control every line of HTML on a Squarespace site. Website builders like BaseKit enable developers to edit CSS and HTML5 code.

Customers do not have to move their website to Squarespace 6, so it will support Squarespace 5 indefinitely. All of its existing customers will be given a free Squarespace 6 website.

Squarespace 6 is available now starting at $8 per month with 24/7 support and a free custom domain with an annual subscription.

Recently, in an interview with the WHIR, Boston startup RepTivity says it chose Squarespace as its web host since it is a “one-stop shop.”
